  17. 1. About The Full Version of Mercenaries
  18. ----------------------------------------
  19. July 8, 2784: General Alexandr Kerensky gives his
  20. fateful order, "Exodus" and 200 transports, filled
  21. with scientists, soldiers and the best minds of the
  22. Inner-Sphere, vanish from known space.  For the 
  23. next three hundred years the Successor Lords use
  24. their regiments of BattleMechs, giant humanoid
  25. war-machines, to destroy what remains of the 
  26. Star-League, each Successor Lord, trying to place
  27. himself on the throne.  Humanity falls into 
  28. darkness.

  30. May 10, 3044, the present: the BattleMechs, once 
  31. used for heavy-labor and construction are now armed
  32. exclusively for battle.  Three hundred years of war
  33. have nearly destroyed man's ability to build his
  34. war-machines, only a few factories remain active,
  35. churning out BattleMechs for the four Successor
  36. States that still battle for the almost forgotten
  37. throne of the Star-League.  Most BattleMechs are 
  38. salvaged from battlefields, the victors scavenging
  39. what they can from the fallen.

  41. Mercenaries now sell their strength to the 
  42. Successor States, all bidding for the best contracts 
  43. with the most powerful warlords.  On the periphery, 
  44. outside of the Successor States, pirates rule petty
  45. "Periphery Kingdoms".  From the fringes of human
  46. space the Pirate-Kings raid weakened Successor
  47. Lords for precious water and spare-parts.

  64.   (including compatible 32-bit drivers for video card,

  68. - 45 MB of uncompressed hard disk space (not including 15 MB
  69.   for downloaded files)
  70. - 256 Color (640 x 480) VLB or PCI Video card 
  71.   with 1MB RAM
  72. - 100% Microsoft compatible mouse and driver
  73. - 100% Sound Blaster compatible sound card
  74. - Dedicated game card is highly recommended for

  77. NOTE: The Windows 95 version uses new Microsoft
  78. DirectX 2 technology, and requires that your system
  79. have the most updated drivers that fully support 
  80. DirectX.

  83. 4. Installation Instructions
  84. ----------------------------

  86. -----A.    Multi-file downloadable demo-----
  87. (1) Right mouse click on the desktop and choose 
  88.     New==>folder.
  89. (2) Now type Merc and ENTER. This should name the folder Merc.
  90. (3) Copy all of the files you downloaded to this
  91.     Merc folder.  You should have a total of 12 files
  92.     consisting of: (all but the first and last are approx. 1.4 MB)

  95.     mdem_2.bin
  96.     mdem_3.bin
  97.     mdem_4.bin
  98.     mdem_5.bin

  105. (4) Once all the files are copied, open the Merc folder and
  106.     double-click on Mercdown.exe (extraction will occur)
  107.     If a file is missing or misnamed, you will get an error
  108.     message; if this happens, check to make sure you've named
  109.     all the files as listed above.
  110. (5) The first extraction prompt will ask if it is OK to
  111.     install all files to C:\MERCDEMO\, type 'Y' if this 
  112.     is OK.  Answering 'N' will prompt you to specify the 
  113.     location to extract the files.
  114. (6) Now click on Start and choose Run.
  115.  
  116.     NOTE: For the next step we will assume you extracted 
  117.     the files to the default location (C:\MERCDEMO). 
  118.  
  119. (7) Type C:\MERCDEMO\MERCDEMO and press Enter.
  120.  
  121. You can delete the Merc folder on your desktop, if
  122. desired.

  125. -----B.    Single-file downloadable demo-----
  126.  
  127. (1) Right mouse click on the desktop and choose 
  128.     New==>folder.
  129. (2) Now type Merc and ENTER. This should name the folder Merc.
  130. (3) Copy the file you downloaded to this Merc folder.
  131.     You should have two files:
  132.     Mercdown.exe         (very small)
  133.     Mercdemo.bin         (about 15 megabytes) 
  134. (4) Once the files are copied, open the Merc folder and
  135.     double-click on Mercdown.exe (extraction will occur)
  136. (5) The first extraction prompt will ask if it is OK to
  137.     install all files to C:\MERCDEMO\, type 'Y' if this 
  138.     is OK.  Answering 'N' will prompt you to specify the 
  139.     location to extract the files.
  140. (6) Now click on Start and choose Run.

  142.     NOTE: For the next step we will assume you extracted 
  143.     the files to the default location (C:\MERCDEMO).

  145. (7) Type C:\MERCDEMO\MERCDEMO and press Enter.

  147. WARNING: Mercenaries uses Microsoft DirectX 2 technology
  148. for Windows(R) 95. You will need drivers for your hardware that support
  149. DirectX 2 to play the Mercenaries Demo. If you are not sure whether 
  150. your hardware and drivers support DirectX 2 please consult the 
  151. hardware manufacturer.

  241. 6. DirectX Information
  242. ---------------------------  
  243. Microsoft DirectX 2 needs to be installed on your
  244. computer to play the Mercenaries Demo. If you need
  245. DirectX 2, you can download it from 
  246. WWW.ACTIVISION.COM
  247.  
  248. If you have downloaded the Microsoft DirectX 2 from
  249. our Web site, you will need to double-click on 
  250. DX2.EXE to extract the files. Once you have extracted
  251. the files, you will need to open the 
  252. DirectX folder and double-click on DXSETUP.EXE. The
  253. program will install the appropriate files on your
  254. computer.

  256. What is DirectX 2 and why do I need it?
  257.  
  258. Microsoft's DirectX 2 is an API (Application 
  259. Programming Interface) set that increases the speed
  260. at which games play under the Windows(R) 95 operating
  261. system. These APIs allow direct access to the enhanced
  262. features of hardware under Windows(R) 95. With 
  263. DirectX 2, a program has instant access to the 
  264. hardware, allowing for great advances in graphics,
  265. sound, video, 3-D, and network capabilities of games.
  266.  
  267. Since Windows(R) 95 and DirectX 2 are relatively
  268. new in the computer world and have not achieved
  269. compatibility with some older video cards, many 
  270. manufacturers are releasing updated drivers for 
  271. Windows(R) 95 to meet the DirectX standard. 
  272. If you are not sure about your video card's 
  273. compatibility, consult the company that makes your 
  274. video card.

  276. If the Microsoft DirectX Installer does not detect 
  277. DirectX 2 on your computer, it will install 
  278. DirectX 2 for you. After installation is complete, 
  279. you will need to restart your computer in order for 
  280. DirectX 2 to take effect.

  282. If you have other Windows 95 games on your computer, 
  283. chances are you already have an earlier version of 
  284. DirectX installed on your computer. In this case, 
  285. the Microsoft Installer will write over that version 
  286. with DirectX 2.  At that point, the game 
  287. installation process will be complete. You will need 
  288. to restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
  289.  
  290. If however, you already have DirectX 2 or a higher
  291. version installed on your computer, the Microsoft
  292. DirectX 2 installer will detect that and not overwrite
  293. any DirectX 2 or higher files.  You will not need to 
  294. restart your computer after installation in order 
  295. to run Mercenaries.

  297. DirectX 2 should not affect any titles designed 
  298. for the original version of DirectX. Should you 
  299. encounter difficulties with DirectX 2, please 
  300. contact Microsoft for further information.
